Our History

Picture
Sunshine School began in 1964 under the sponsorship of the Searcy Junior Auxiliary. Beginning with seven special education students attending on a half-day basis, school was held in a converted army barracks on land leased from Searcy Public Schools.

In 1973, by facilitating the use of state and federal grants and community contributions, the building located a 304 S. Sowell in Searcy, AR was constructed. This building, along with additional buildings at the site, housed the school all the way through the 2010-2011 school year.

In August 2011, the school was able to relocate into their new, up-to-date, and spacious facility with 12 classrooms, a large multipurpose room, several therapy rooms, as well as office and conference room space. There will also be a large playground constructed in the very near future.

Who We Are

The Sunshine School serves students of all ages with developmental disabilities. There is no age limit for students to be admitted to the preschool, nor is there an automatic cut-off age for adults.

The school is a non-profit organization (501c3) funded by state and federal monies and tuition form public schools. Contributions from United Way of White County are used as a match to generate these funds and to augment services. There is no cost to a family for a student to attend Sunshine School.

Currently students being served are from Searcy, Augusta, Pangburn, Kensett, Des Arc, Pleasant Plains, Beebe, Judsonia, Hazen, Bradford, and McCrory.
